If your computer is being used more as a jukebox, or if you like customizing your computer’s user interface, I have an excellent software recommendation. I have been using this program for many years, and it’s always been stable, whether in XP, Vista, or 7. This amazing program will add a fading Volume notification to your Windows desktop that will appear when you adjust your computer’s volume.
Using very few resources, even while gaming I notice no difference with this program running. Plus, the program knows to not display when a full-screen application is running. It’s very easy to install and customize this program, but best of all it’s Free! What is it you ask? The name is 3RVX!
3RVX is a useful volume notification/control tool which emulates the volume bezel of Mac OS X. When the volume changes, the bezel pops up with the current system volume level. 3RVX is a skinnable volume controller and display that supports alpha-blended skins, cool fade effects, drive eject notification, and a lot more. It was originally developed to emulate the Mac OS X volume bezel on Windows, but has evolved to support more options and features.
Upon completion of the installation, the default notification that appears on the screen is identical to that of Mac OS X. However, 3RVX allows you to customize the look and feel of the icon. You can configure its fading delay and speed. There are also skins that you can use, and you can even create your own. 3RVX will even let you know when drives are ejected from the system. The hotkey interface is very responsive and detects key strokes quite efficiently. You can tweak where on the screen the on screen volume display will appear and even which screen in case you have multiple monitors. If you don’t have a multimedia keyboard you can also configure keyboard shortcuts that adjust the volume, mute, etc.
